My personal thank you for Chicken Soup with Rice, one of my most favorite books of my childhood. Thanks, Mr. Sendak.
It was and still is an honor for me to pay tribute to Mr. Sendak at the wonderful Terrible Yellow Eyes blog by Cory Godbey.
Thank you, my dear blog friends, for your wonderful visits and comments..I hope you are all doing well! ~ Shirley
What a tragedy...a lot of great artist left this year alone :(
ReplyDeleteHope you're doing great Shirley...have a lovely week ahead! xox
My favorite book illustrated by Maurice Sendak is Isaw Esau. His illustrations of a collection of rhymes edited by Iona and Peter Opie are some of the most darling images.
ReplyDelete"I saw Esau kissing Kate,
The fact is we all three saw;
For I saw him,
And he saw me,
And she saw I saw Esau."
This book was a gift to me by my sister in New Jersey during one of her visits with us.
My favorite Sendak illustration is that of a mother carrying a baby, it starts raining and the mother protects the baby from the rain by forming an arch with her arm and then she turns into a tree with a canopy! How genius!!!
Long live Maurice Sendak!
Haha! I remember that illustration! I need to read that book this evening.
ReplyDeleteAh no more beetles in my tea
making googly eyes at me.
I can't remember the rhyme about Grace ah yes,
Grace is a girl who needs to wash her face!
What makes this rhymes darling are Sendak's illustrations!!!
Eh, I need to get back to this beast of a rule.:(
ReplyDeleteBreak over.
These are wonderful pieces, Shirley. Wow. Yes, we'll all miss him. Your illustrations are just as good, if not better! :D xo
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed a sad day for illustration. I was actually looking at your illustrations on the Terrible Yellow Eyes tribute site earlier today.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Mr Sendak was thrilled to see so many artists interpret his works and share their images there. You were part of that wonderful moment :o)
Aaah, Shirley. Sad day. May Mr. Sendak be sailing away to be the king of all things mischievous and whimsical and slightly naughty. He has been a part of so many of our lives. I've always loved these paintings of yours. They, like him, are timeless.

Such a loss! I'm glad other people appreciated Maurice as much as I did. Beautiful tribute and paintings!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful tribute! And what an enormous loss. He touched SO many people's childhoods, and will continue to do so, I'm sure...
ReplyDeleteI really love these Shirley. They are a wonderful tribute. Myles has been talking about him all day! We heard it on the radio so all day today he has asked everyone "did you know that Maurice Sendak died?" You should see the looks on peoples faces when they hear a four year old ask that.
ReplyDeleteWonderful homage to the Great Mr. Sendak!

ReplyDeleteI was very saddened, too. It was one of my favorite childhood books, too - as well as my hubby's. And I did very much love the film adaptation from three years ago. Mr. Sendak will never be forgotten - his magic will always live on. I just adore your tribute art!!!
