..kitty was also enticed by the smell wafting from within the newspaper-wrapped item. Can you tell what that might be?
** note..this was an exremely difficult illustration for me..I just couldn't for the life of me draw this one "right"...but many, many attempts later, this is what came of it. I'm happy that I tried. I'll be posting the other attempted sketches too...feedback is ALWAYS appreciated. Thanks for stopping by!
Wow great take on illustration Friday! It will be interesting to see your other drawings of this piece. I really like the angle you have drawn this at, and the very cute characters. I think he was wrapping up some fish and chips yum!!
ReplyDeletei really like this version, but i know what you mean when sometimes it just doesn't come out the way you envisioned. good job sticking with it until you came up with something you liked.
ReplyDeleteadorable piece, the perspective is wonderful and I love the scale of that sweet kittys head, so very cute.
ReplyDeleteNice job on the expressions of your characters—and that cat means business! Great loose style!
ReplyDeleteI think you've done a great job! I love the shading, lighting and their expressive faces! Lighten up on yourself, it's great!
ReplyDeleteBird's eye view...very tough but you did it well, so be proud! Very sweet!
ReplyDeleteShirley, you are very talented and you have the right perspective: you're not afraid to experiment with different styles or media, and you believe in practice. I love how creative you are with your compositions, using different angles and characters.
ReplyDeleteI like this style of yours, using pencil and watercolor. It's very soft and inviting. And you're an inspiration, really: a lot of times when creating an illustration I worry too much about the end result, forgetting to appreciate the value of doing things over and over, and enjoying the learning process. :-)
Nicola - so glad you stopped by - yes, it's fish and chips! : ) Yumma. Thanks for you kind comments!!
ReplyDeleteAmy - thank you for stopping by...and thanks, but now I'm thinking the little kitty's head is a bit large..good catch and I will double double check scale! : )
rmsmi - nice of you to swing by! thank you!
Indigene - lovely of you to come by..and thank you so much!
Phyllis - aha! That's what I was trying for..and you are so generous for telling me this..I tell you, it's a struggle...and so this helps my confidence for sure..thank you!!
Oh Monica! I just missed you - but wow, THANK YOU! You are super to give me such kind feedback..I do strive to keep pushing myself..this was really a tough illo for me..I am going to post those sketches to show you. (don't laugh!) : ) Anyway, last week, my post took me a few hours at most from concept to "finished" piece. This week - boy, I sketched and sketched, and re-sketched...then desperatey wanted to get to the painting...I see all of the flaws, but I'm ok with it..and so to post it is a "win" for me (in that I found it "complete" enough for viewing. : ) So thank you - this helps me so much. I am so glad you have come by!
ReplyDeleteHey, Shirley, I'm back. :-) I know exactly what you mean: sometimes I am able to go from an idea, to sketch and final illo so quickly and naturally, and it's such a great feeling. But other times (most times, really) I struggle to get what's on my mind onto paper, and get frustrated with myself. But you're so right, it's all about the journey...
ReplyDeleteGreat job, I must come back see your work. Very inspiring, loving the gesture of all people and the cat here.
ReplyDeleteThe cat is hungry right!
Hi Shirley. I think you did a wonderful job. Its a challenging perspective but you handled it very well. From the preparatory sketches, it's clear you opted for a challenge, and I think you should be very proud. It's a lovely piece!
ReplyDeleteGreat illo! And lovely to see your process. I really like the image of the boy running down the alleyway with the cat behind him too. Maybe you've come up with a whole story here...?
ReplyDeleteWell done!
Pretty piece Shirley. Like your choice of perspective and composition...enhances the attention on the kitty. There's a nice pause in this image...but I also enjoy the movement and anticipation of your sketches 2 & 3! Really nice!
ReplyDeleteLovely work and a fresh perspective. That kitty might be in luck, seeing as the shopkeeper looks like a kind man. Really enjoy seeing your process.
