Alice in Wonderland:: Um from Umbridge, and "Drink Me"

"Um, from Umbridge"
"Drink Me"
It takes me awhile to see the current films, but have you all seen the new Alice in Wonderland film with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter and Mia Wasikowska? I enjoyed our family movie night and was inspired to paint a few illustrations.

As I painted "Drink Me", I realized that I am heavily influenced by the Disney film and so Alice definitely looks more Alice from that movie. Funny how that happens!

And as for one of my favorite visuals from the new movie, I just had to paint "Um from Umbridge"...and those hardworking monkeys. I realize now that I have to study monkeys - as these definitely didn't turn out how I had envisioned!

Have a great week everyone! - Shirley

  2. Excuse me, I am beside myself. I just wrote a multi-paragraph comment about your watercolor paintings and how much we love Alice In Wonderland here and about John Tinniel and how Bella intoduced me to plates and dishes with images of Tinniel's illustrations and Blogger ate it. So right now I am fuming. I cannot repeat my excitement... Oh that was a fun comment because I sounded like a lunatic with my excitement but now, I am just so exhausted...

  6. She drank from a bottle called DRINK ME
And up she grew so tall,
She ate from a plate called TASTE ME
And down she shrank so small
And so she changed, while other folks
    Never tried nothin’ at all

    *i feel like Alice.

  13. Shirley, this is very good, I loved several details that I discovered in the illustration. You're changing your way of painting, no?
I like the strength of your colors, I do not really encourage me to leave the pale.

  14. the first time I read this book of Lewis Carroll, I immediately fall in love with the world of Alicia en el País de las Maravillas. Now I like to discover drawings about this wonderful story. Did you see your first drawing? (Um, for Umbridge) I love her red dress, the curtains and the landscape that one sees for the window...

  17. oh, I haven't gotten to see it yet! I am so jealous Shirley. I can't wait to see it. These are so cute. I find that Disney seems to influence my imagined versions of characters too. But I definitely see this a "Shirley version" of Alice here.

  21. Shirley, I much prefer your interpretation of Alice over Tim Burton's movie adaptation(he kinda creeps me out-haha)
Your Alice is just adorable and lovely...as all of your work is!!
I find watercolour to be very tricky to master without things getting overworked and forced. Your watercolour work is so gorgeous and seemingly effortless. I just can't get over how delicate your faces and details are everytime, you must need to use a very teeny brush?
Thanks for popping over to my blog and leaving such sweet comments- made my day:)

  23. Zounds and Jibblies!!! SHIRLEY SHIRLEY SHIRLEYYYYYYYYYY!!!! Wow, these are GORGEOUS!!! Classic! I cannot get over how delicate and feminine her feature are. The little monkeys are too CUTE! And the different patterns in the drapes and heart in the shrubbery are all fantastic details. I really do have to see this movie. I will probably be envisioning your Alice when I do!

Still not sure what Jibblies may be, but it does sound like you need to protect them as they are quite delicate. :D
