Illustration Friday :: Surrender

"I refuse to acquiesce to your request."
~Barbosa, in the Pirates of the Carribean

A very big stretch for surrender, but the image of Elizabeth dangling the medallion over the edge of Barbosa's pirate ship kept popping into my head. This is a pencil sketch scanned and painted in photoshop. Changing it up (technique-wise) helps to clear my mind..what do you do to help when you're stuck in an illustration rut? I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

  7. Signing up for Illustration Friday was my first step out my illustration rut, I wasn't able to think of ideas otherwise. Looking at other people's art via blogs helps too. Trying out new techniques makes things interesting too when all else seems dull.

  9. I agree about the foreshortening, but it's still a nice piece with a good likeness. This is my first time visiting your site and I want to tell you that your work is amazing! Very inspiring stuff. I especially like the Where the Wild Thing Are inspired work.

  11. Hi Shirley - what a lovely piece! I really like the moody colour scheme! I usually hunt through my books for inspiration and often, like you, try a different medium or technique!

  12. Hey it's great to do something different, like paint with your left hand, paint by feel - or sound :) It's a learning process with a new medium. But it's fun eh/? Your water colours are so good, it's a mistake to compare new things to them, but you can take the strengths of one and apply to the other perhaps.

    The woman's face is devine, it's a good composition and gets the message across!
